This course is designed for mental health practitioners who would like to increase their knowledge of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Course aims

The aims of this course are to:

  • Summarize the historical development of PTSD
  • Discuss the diagnostic criteria of PTSD in DSM and ICD
  • Describe the epidemiology of PTSD in terms of prevalence, gender differences, comorbidity, risk factors, course, and phenomenology
  • Provide a summary of the major etiological theories of PTSD
  • Introduce and describe evidence-based treatments for PTSD
Course learning outcomes

After taking this course practitioners will be able to:

  • Describe the symptom profile and diagnostic criteria of PTSD in both the DSM5 and ICD-11
  • Describe and understand the epidemiology of PTSD, with particular reference to emergency services workers
  • Understand etiological theories of PTSD e.g., what explains the development of the condition
  • Have an increased awareness of evidence-based treatments for PTSD.
