PTSD and Other Trauma-related Presentations for GPs

Course description

This program is an important initiative of the WorkCover Tasmania Board. It has been developed on behalf of the WorkCover Tasmania Board by Phoenix Australia, in conjunction with WorkSafe Tasmania.

You will have access to contemporary, evidence-based information to assist you in supporting patients with PTSD, including those for whom PTSD is work-related. The program also provides guidance in relation to the requirements of the Tasmanian workers compensation scheme.

Funded access

WorkCover Tasmania is funding free access to all four modules of this training program for the first 100 GPs to enrol. If you are a GP in Tasmania, please contact us with your RACGP number and region of practice, and indicate your interest in the PTSD training. We will then email you a code allowing you to enroll in all four modules for free.

PTSD and trauma-related presentationsarrow

Content: In this module, you will extend your knowledge of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and other trauma-related presentations. If you are a General Practitioner, you will have access to three additional modules, where you can explore research findings, expert and lived-experience led insights, evidence-based strategies and practical tools for the assessment and treatment of individuals who have been impacted by trauma. The course will help you build the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to provide comprehensive care and support throughout the treatment journey.

Learning outcome: Recognise PTSD and the spectrum of trauma related presentations in general practice.

Assessing PTSD and the spectrum of trauma-related presentationsarrow

Content: In this module, the second in a series of four, you will explore good practice recommendations for the assessment of individuals who have experienced trauma. You will also be introduced to psychometrically sound screening tools that you may wish to incorporate in your usual assessment routine. You will score and interpret these tools and use the findings to develop provisional diagnoses.

Learning outcome: Apply evidence-based assessment practices to the assessment of trauma-impacted individuals in general practice.

Treatment of PTSD and trauma related presentationsarrow

Content: In this module, the third in a series of four, you will consider the importance of a stepped-care approach for the management of individuals who have experienced trauma, explore low intensity interventions for individuals experiencing transient psychological distress or sub-threshold trauma-related presentations, build you knowledge of first line psychological treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and consider lived experience insights.

Learning outcome: Implement evidence-based interventions for individuals with PTSD and the spectrum of trauma related presentations.

Pharmacotherapy for PTSDarrow

Content: In this module, the final module in a series of four, you will explore pharmacological interventions for PTSD, and evidence regarding complementary and alternative therapies.  You will also meet psychiatrist Dr John Cooper, an expert in the treatment of PTSD and the spectrum of trauma-related presentations.  

Learning outcome: Apply evidence-based decision making to the use of pharmacology in the treatment of PTSD.
