A self-paced course that explores, in depth, the use of imaginal and in vivo exposure therapy and trauma-focussed cognitive therapy. 

For the best possible learning experience, we recommend that before you complete this course you have a good knowledge of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, feel competent in assessment and the development of formulation-driven treatment planning, and have a comprehensive understanding of all elements of TF-CBT

Why do this course?

Drawing on your existing skills delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, this course will support you to use Trauma-focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with clients who are experiencing clinically relevant posttraumatic stress symptoms.

As you learn about imaginal and in vivo exposure therapy and trauma-focussed cognitive therapy, you will be able to individualise your learning activities according to the age of your client group. You will observe video demonstrations and participate in clinical decision-making tasks and reflection activities as you apply the components of treatment to your chosen case vignettes. You will also participate in short quiz activities that will help you gauge your understanding of the material.

What is Trauma-focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Trauma-focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an evidence-based treatment for children, adolescents and adults experiencing clinically relevant posttraumatic stress symptoms. It can help individuals come to terms with trauma through exposure to, and emotional processing of, memories of the event.

Learning objectives

After completing Implementing Trauma-focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, you will be able to:

  • Nominate a range of professional strategies designed to support you in your use of Trauma-focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Identify the principles underlying the use of imaginal and in vivo exposure therapy
  • Recognise the component skills that comprise the effective use of imaginal and in vivo exposure therapy and trauma-focussed cognitive therapy, and
  • Identify a range of strategies that can be employed to manage problematic reactions in the use of the imaginal, in vivo and trauma-focussed cognitive therapy.
This course in sequence

This course concludes a sequence on treating PTSD with Trauma-focussed CBT. It is preceded by courses on understanding PTSD and assessing clients and formulating a case, and a course on understanding Trauma-focussed CBT
